Intent

Career Opportunities in Modern Foreign Languages

The study of French allows you to develop skills that can lead to many different career choices. Some examples of careers you could pursue include community development, linguistics, airport work, language engineering, customer services, bilingual classroom assisting, cruise ship work, interpreting, intelligence/security work, the diplomatic service, tourist information work, international law, hotel management, tour operating, the European Commission, aid work, exporting/importing, immigration, travel agency work, and teaching English abroad, to name but a few. The opportunities are endless....

French  (or any other language, for that matter) is accepted by all employers and universities because the wide range of skills and knowledge provided allows students to develop as individuals. Most universities offer courses in these subjects, giving students the opportunity for further development.

 

Year 7 Curriculum Overview

Autumn Term

Introductions
Vocabulary relating to family, physical descriptions/descriptions of personality, likes and dislikes, talking about what people do.
Students will quickly show progress in using key vocab of the unit and be able to apply the grammar rules in their speaking and writing, as well as recognising relevant information when they read and listen.
Ongoing self/peer/teacher assessments of classwork and homework, culminating in end of Unit tests.
School Vocabulary relating to school subjects, uniform, routines, life of a typical French student. Students will continue to refine their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  They will recognise more commonly used words and phrases and elevate their use of French grammar. Free Time Students will be able to describe the weather and seasons in French.  They will learn how to give justified opinions for whether they like or dislike different sports and leisure activities.  They will be able to discuss the sports and leisure activities they partake in - saying why, giving details on the clothing worn and the weather conditions needed.  They will practise how to use the verbs ‘to play’ and ‘to do’ with the partitive article to express leisure activities that they do.  Students will learn to form and answer questions (interrogative).  Students will use cognates and context to decipher texts and audio.  Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the texts and audios to create their own texts to explain the sports and leisure activities they like/dislike and give justified opinions.  Students will be able to partake in detailed discussion regarding sports and leisure activities, giving opinions and agreeing/disagreeing with the opinions of others.

Family Life Students will expand on their prior knowledge of family members to describe them both physically/personality-wise in detail.  They will be able to give basic inter-personal descriptions using the possessive adjective.  They will be able to give details about who is in their family, including pets.  Students will also learn to describe their home and their hometown, giving justified opinions on what parts they like/dislike.  Students will be able to understand written texts and audio passages about families and their relationships and be able to answer comprehension questions.  Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the texts and audios to create their own texts to describe their own families and relationships.  Students will be able to ask others about their own families and make comparisons with their own.

Sum1 – in town  Students will be able to describe places you might find in a town in French. They will understand pricesThey will be able to discuss where they go at the weekend and will learn the near future tense to express their plans for the coming weekend. Students will practice inviting someone out and making plans using the modal verb ‘to want’. Students will learn how to order drinks and food at a café and learn the difference between the informal and formal register for thisStudents will practice using several tenses and time frames together to narrate their plans. Students will use cognates and context to decipher texts and audio. Students will be able to understand written texts and audio passages about town and their plans  and be able to answer comprehension questions. Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the texts and audios to create their own texts to explain the places in town they visit and have interactional conversations. Students will be able to partake in role-play conversations, agreeing/disagreeing with the opinions of others.

Sum2 – film project: Les Malheurs de Sophie
Students will expand on their prior knowledge of describing people both physically/personality-wise in detail. They will be able to describe the film poster and trailer using previous knowledge of clothing, colours and animals. Students will learn the historical context of the film and be able to discuss the difference between nobles, the bourgeoisie and the poor. They will create their own film idea of a similar context and design the film’s poster. Students will be able to understand video excerpts and audio passages about families and their relationships and be able to answer comprehension questions. Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the video and audio to create their own ideas to describe their own families and relationships. Students will be able to describe the historical context of a film.

Year 8 Curriculum Overview

Topic: Holidays
Vocabulary relating to destinations, activities, weather, culture and food/drink.
Students will show increasing proficiency in using the key vocabulary and grammar of the unit, in particular when talking about what they usually do on holiday, and what they did previously.
Ongoing self/peer/teacher assessment of classwork and homework, concluding in end of Unit tests.
Festivals and Celebrations

Vocabulary for a variety of key festivals, including Carnival.

Describing a festival in detail, including what food and drink is served at these festivals.

They will learn the verb ‘you must’.  They will be able to discuss injuries and illnesses and be able to take part in a conversation with a doctor. Students will practice interview skills of a sportsperson. They will practice using 3 tenses together and when asking and answering questions. Students will use cognates and context to decipher texts and audio. Students will be able to understand written texts and audio passages about live sport and be able to answer comprehension questions. Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the texts and audios to create their own texts to write and speak about live sport. Students will learn the historical context of the film and be able to discuss the differences between working class and upper class people.  Students will be able to understand video excerpts and audio passages about friendships and their relationships and be able to answer comprehension questions. Students will learn how to use infinitive in combination with other verbs and revise the different tenses they have learned throughout the year so far. Students will improve on previously learned translation skills for both English – French and French – English. They will continue to practice using 3 tenses together in order to fully narrate a trip to a French-speaking country. Students will use cognates and context to decipher texts and audio. Students will be able to understand written texts and audio passages about French-speaking countries and be able to answer comprehension questions. School Life Students will expand on their knowledge of talking about school to learn about school life in francophone countries.  They will be able to further extend their opinions of their subjects and the rules by agreeing/disagreeing with others and making comparisons both between subjects and school life as a child and currently.  Students will practise describing photos in more detail, using irregular verbs in the perfect tense and be able to use the perfect and imperfect tenses accurately, knowing which to use when.  Students will be able to understand written texts and audio passages about school life and be able to answer comprehension questions.  Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the texts and audios to create their own texts to discuss school life and what they like/dislike and give justified opinions.  Students will be able to partake in detailed discussion regarding school life, giving opinions and agreeing/disagreeing with the opinions of others.

They will talk about geography and the climate , environmental problems and solutions and how new technologies might help in the fight to prevent further destruction of the environment. Students will practice numbers and percentages. They will learn more complex comparatives and superlatives, the passive voice and the present participle. Students will be able to understand written texts and audio passages about the environment and be able to answer comprehension questions. Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the texts and audios to create their own texts to write and speak about the environment. Students will be able to partake in role-play conversations, agreeing/disagreeing with the opinions of others and making comparisons.

Spring Term

What are we learning? What knowledge, understanding and skills will we gain? What will excellence look like? How will this be assessed?
International and Global Themes Students will learn to discuss weather and natural disasters.  They will learn about the issues facing the environment and how to go about protecting it.  Students will discuss ethical shopping and volunteering.  Students will practise the simple future tense, modal verbs, emphatic pronouns and will be able to understand the passive voice.  Students will be able to understand written texts and audio passages about international and global themes and be able to answer comprehension questions.  Students will be able to use their own knowledge and those of the texts and audios to create their own texts to discuss international and global themes and what they like/dislike and give justified opinions.  Students will be able to partake in detailed discussion regarding international and global themes, giving opinions and agreeing/disagreeing with the opinions of others.

Spoken Exam Practise Students will practise skills for the upcoming spoken exam.  Students will be able to describe a photo, take part in a role-play and have conversations regarding the 5 themes of the course. 

Students will sit their speaking exams. 

Summer Term

Sum1 – speaking practice and exams 

Students will be revising the 5 themes of the curriculum for their speaking exams. These take place between April 25 - May 2.  

Once complete, students will move on to revising for the other elements of the examination.

Students will successfully navigate a role-play situation, describe a photo and have a conversation on 2 separate themes.   Formally as a GCSE 
Sum2 – revision 

Students will be revising for the listening, reading and writing elements of the GCSE examination across all 5 themes. In particular they will look at the different tenses

Students will maximise this revision time by revising at home. They should focus on forming and recognising tenses as well as vocabulary content.  Student will regularly complete written tasks that will be teacher assessed and feedback will be provided.
